The Case For Boring Entrepreneurship

As financial turmoil swirls in the wake of the S&P’s recent downgrade of the U.S. credit rating, it is evident that our economy needs help.  Much of what we need as a nation lies in the hands of our elected officials.  However, we also need a steady crop of new entrepreneurs to boost employment by creating more businesses. And with respect to these entrepreneurs and their businesses, I say the more boring the better.

Every week with the current American government is a new crisis, a new set of challenges for a nation whose people have grown accustomed to government solving its problems.  And we certainly are facing a slew of economic and social problems.  But compounding problems is that this recession is much different than any other.  This time, the solution is dependent more on the individual, not government.   But is the individual ready to step up?

Boy-Genius Lands $1.5 Million for Stealth Startup

The first company to emerge from Peter Thiel's great "stop going to college and create a business" program is being led by a 20-year-old who doesn't quite fit the dropout description Thiel was going for. In fact, despite his age, Andrew Hsu has three degrees from the University of Washington and was working on his PhD in neuroscience when he left to develop the idea for his company.

Entrepreneurship: Nothing to Lose and Everything to Gain

I recently caught up with Ryan Blair, who is a serial entrepreneur and author of the new book "Nothing to Lose, Everything to Gain." Ryan established his first company, 24-7 Tech when he was only twenty-one years old. Since then, he has created and actively invested in multiple start-ups and has become a self-made multimillionaire. After he sold his company ViSalus Sciences to Blyth in early 2008, the global recession took the company to the brink of failure resulting in a complete write off of the stock and near bankruptcy. Ryan as CEO went "all in" betting his last million dollars on its potential and turned the company around from the edge of failure to more than $150,000,000 a year in revenue in only 16 months winning the coveted DSN Global Turn Around Award in 2010. In this interview, Ryan talks about how he re-branded himself after being in a gang, the issues with the education system, and more.

Solving Infant Mortality with Social Entrepreneurship

Four million babies die every year simply due to an inability to maintain their own body temperature. Incubators can save lives, but traditionally cost up to $20,000 and require a constant supply of electricity—prohibitive demands in many parts of the developing world. Leveraging the power of social entrepreneurship, Jane Chen and a team of her Stanford Graduate School of Business classmates developed Embrace, a portable and electricity-free alternative sold at about 0.1% of the cost of current incubators. In this audio lecture Chen discusses the challenges and rewards of the development process, and shares her insights on the attitudes that allow entrepreneurs to find success. Jane Chen was speaking as part of the annual Women in Management banquet organized by the Stanford Business School Alumni Association.

How Does Your State Rank for Entrepreneurship?

New York is at the top of the list; South Carolina is at the bottom.

What is Social Entrepreneurship?

Interest in “social” entrepreneurship continues to soar. The number of conferences and business plan competitions on social entrepreneurship are growing rapidly, the number of courses offered on university campuses is expanding, and social entrepreneurship is getting a lot of press. So, what differentiates a social entrepreneur from a plain old vanilla entrepreneur? I must say that it isn’t clear to me….

When do I quit my day job?

”"What happens once I have a business idea?” and “When do I quit my day job?.” The show is formatted in 4-5 minute episodes and draws on Adelson’s many failures and successes —  he bestows pearls of wisdom like “If you’re distracted [at a your current job], just quit, you’re being a douche.” Love.
